Before diving into our services lets first decompose the cloud computing buzz word and all its associated components.
Cloud Computing is the term used to describe a broad range of services. Other relevant developments in technology have caused vendors to use the term “Cloud” for products that fall outside the proper definition. To understand cloud and the value it offers organisations one needs to understand what cloud is and that it has different components.
As cloud is a collection of services, organisations can choose how, where and when they utilise Cloud Computing. Due to the different as a services layer’s cloud computing is known as a stack since the services are built one on top of another under the general term “Cloud”. The generally accepted definition of Cloud Computing comes from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
In summary NIST defines cloud computing as “a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be quickly be provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction”.
The characteristics of Cloud offered by NIST include:
- On-demand self-service. The ability for an end user to sign up and receive services without the long delays that have characterized traditional IT.
- Broad network access. Ability to access the service via standard platforms (desktop, laptop, mobile etc).
- Resource pooling. Resources are pooled across multiple customers.
- Rapid elasticity. Capability can scale to cope with demand peaks.
- Measured Service. Billing is metered and delivered as a utility service.
